Writing

Our vision at Stanwix School, is to enable all our pupils to become confident and fluent writers, developing the skills to express ideas with clarity and power. We believe every child has a unique story to tell and through practice and encouragement, they can find their voice. Writing should be more than a task—it should be a source of enjoyment, where discovery and growth happen. We aim to nurture a space where writers feel safe to take risks, think creatively, and explore. Ultimately, writing becomes not only a way to communicate, but also a tool to enhance learning and connect with others.

The Teaching of Writing

Our writing curriculum has been carefully designed using the statutory programmes of study alongside current educational research, ensuring it meets national expectations while reflecting best practice in literacy development. It is underpinned by a broad and balanced approach, providing opportunities for pupils to engage with a wide range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. High-quality texts and diverse stimuli inspire writing, fostering creativity and language development. Cross-curricular links enrich learning by embedding purposeful writing within wider subjects, giving pupils meaningful contexts to apply their skills. Transcription and grammar are taught discretely to ensure accuracy and fluency, while being consistently revisited and applied within authentic writing tasks. This balanced approach equips pupils to write with confidence, precision, and imagination across a variety of forms and audiences.
