MATHS

Our Maths Vision

At Stanwix School, our vision for Mathematics is to empower all pupils to develop a deep, lasting understanding of mathematical concepts through a mastery approach.

We aim to spark curiosity and build confidence by providing a practical, engaging and enjoyable Maths curriculum that promotes fluency, encourages reasoning and nurtures problem-solving skills. We believe every child can succeed in Maths and strive to challenge stereotypes about who can be a mathematician. Through rich mathematical experiences, children learn to explore patterns, make connections and think critically. By building this strong foundation, our pupils grow into confident, independent learners who are equipped to apply their mathematical thinking to real-world situations.

Our scheme overview

White Rose Maths Scheme

At Stanwix School, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme to deliver a consistent, high-quality and engaging Maths curriculum from EYFS to Year 6. The scheme is built around the principles of mastery, ensuring all pupils develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.

Key Features:

  • Mastery Approach: Concepts are taught in small steps to ensure secure understanding before moving on.
  • Fluency: Pupils build confidence with number facts and efficient methods through regular practice.
  • Reasoning: Children are encouraged to explain their thinking, justify answers, and explore different strategies.
  • Problem Solving: Real-life and abstract problems help pupils apply their knowledge creatively and logically.

Structure:

  • Progression: Each year group follows a carefully sequenced journey through key topics such as Number, Calculation, Geometry, Measurement, and Statistics.
  • Small Steps: Lessons are broken into manageable chunks to support all learners.
  • Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA): Pupils move from hands-on resources to visual representations and abstract thinking.
  • Assessment: Regular formative and summative assessments help identify gaps and inform teaching.

Support for All Learners:

  • Differentiation: Challenges and scaffolds are built into lessons to support a wide range of abilities.

Our Approach:

  • We carefully adapt the White Rose scheme to suit our school’s context and learners. Tasks are thoughtfully selected and grouped into fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving categories, allowing children to work through them independently at their own pace. The scheme's teacher input is edited to ensure clarity and relevance.
