    Welcome to Year 3

Welcome to the Year 3 page. Here you will find information about the curriculum, class routines and key information to support your child throughout the year. Year 3 marks the beginning of Key Stage 2 and provides children with opportunities to develop greater independence, responsibility and confidence as learners.

Year 3 is made up of two classes:

    3H

    • Teacher: Miss Helm

    3B

    • Teachers: Mrs Blain

Children are also taught by Mrs Watson throughout the week.

    Learning in Year 3

Year 3 builds upon the strong foundations established in Key Stage 1 whilst introducing children to new challenges and experiences across the curriculum. Learning is designed to be engaging, ambitious and purposeful, helping children develop their knowledge, understanding and skills across a broad range of subjects.

Throughout the year, pupils will take part in a variety of learning opportunities across English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Art, Design Technology, Computing, Music, Physical Education and Religious Education. Wherever possible, learning is brought to life through practical experiences, enquiry and investigation.

    Reading

Reading continues to be a central part of learning in Year 3. Children are encouraged to read regularly both at school and at home to develop fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. Reading widely supports learning across all curriculum areas and helps children become confident, independent learners.

We encourage parents and carers to continue supporting reading at home by listening to their child read, discussing books and promoting a love of reading.

    Mathematics

At Stanwix School, we follow the White Rose Maths approach. Children develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills through carefully sequenced learning. As pupils move into Key Stage 2, they are encouraged to explain their thinking, apply their knowledge in different contexts and develop confidence when tackling more challenging concepts.

In addition to the main maths lesson, Mastering Number is taught each day. It focuses on securing additive facts within 20, strengthening number sense, and developing fluency with addition and subtraction strategies that bridge 10.

    Physical Education

Physical Education is an important part of the curriculum and helps children develop teamwork, resilience, fitness and confidence.

    PE Days

    • Monday

    • Tuesday

Children should come to school wearing their PE kit on PE days.

    PE Kit

    • Black or navy shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms
    • Plain yellow T-shirt or Stanwix School yellow T-shirt
    • Black hoodie, tracksuit top or jumper
    • Trainers

Please ensure that jewellery is not worn on PE days and that long hair is tied back where appropriate.

    Supporting Learning at Home

Children may be provided with activities to reinforce and extend learning completed in school. This may include reading, spelling practice, mathematics activities or curriculum-based projects. Regular support at home helps children develop good learning habits and build confidence.

    Communication

If you have any questions regarding your child's learning or wellbeing, please contact the school or speak to your child's class teacher.

We look forward to supporting your child throughout Year 3 as they continue their journey through Key Stage 2.
