Year 4

Welcome to Year 4

Welcome to the Year 4 page. Here you will find information about the curriculum, class routines, key dates and ways to support your child throughout the year. Year 4 is an important stage in Key Stage 2 as children continue to build independence, take greater responsibility for their learning and prepare for the opportunities and challenges of the upper junior years.

Year 4 is made up of 2 classes:

4H – Teacher: Miss Harkins

4R – Teacher: Miss Reay

Learning in Year 4

Year 4 offers a broad and engaging curriculum designed to develop children's knowledge, understanding and skills across a range of subjects. Learning is carefully planned to encourage curiosity, creativity and resilience, whilst providing opportunities for pupils to apply their learning in meaningful contexts.

Children will study a range of exciting topics throughout the year across English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Art, Design Technology, Computing, Music, Physical Education and Religious Education.

Reading

Reading remains a key focus in Year 4. Across the school, we use the Little Wandle reading programme to support fluency, comprehension and a love of reading.

Children will receive a Little Wandle reading book to take home and read over a two-week period, alongside a reading-for-pleasure book. We encourage regular reading at home and ask that parents and carers record comments in reading records to support communication between home and school.

Mathematics

At Stanwix School, we follow the White Rose Maths approach, helping children develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. As children progress through Year 4, they are encouraged to explain their thinking, apply mathematical concepts in different contexts and tackle increasingly challenging problems with confidence.

In addition to the main maths lesson, Mastering Number is taught each day. It continues to develop pupils’ fluency and confidence with number through focused sessions. Children build a deeper understanding of multiplication and division facts, strengthen their mental calculation strategies, and use known number relationships to solve problems efficiently.

Physical Education

Children take part in PE twice each week and should come to school wearing their PE kit on PE days. Pupils remain in their PE kit for the entire school day, so there is no need for PE kits to be stored in school.

PE Days

  • Tuesday
  • Wednesday

PE Kit

  • Yellow T-shirt
  • Plain dark shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms
  • Dark jumper or hoodie
  • Trainers that children can fasten or tie independently

Earrings

School staff are unable to remove or tape earrings. Children should either be able to remove and replace earrings independently or avoid wearing them on PE days.

Homework

Homework supports and reinforces learning completed in school.

  • Maths homework is sent home on a Tuesday and should be returned the following Tuesday.
  • Spellings are sent home on a Friday and returned the following Friday for assessment.
  • Foundation subject homework may also be set, with clear instructions and submission dates provided.

Water Bottles

Children should bring a clearly named water bottle to school each day.

School Uniform

We ask that all children attend school in the correct uniform each day and that all items of clothing and equipment are clearly named.

Residential Visit

Year 4 pupils have the opportunity to take part in a residential visit to Robin Wood during their time in school. Information regarding residential visits and parent information meetings will be shared with families throughout the year as arrangements are finalised.

Communication

If you have any questions regarding your child's learning, wellbeing or school life, please contact the school or speak to a member of the Year 4 team.

We look forward to working with you throughout the year and supporting your child as they continue their learning journey in Year 4.
