Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

Welcome to the Year 2 page. Here you will find key information about our classes, curriculum, routines and ways to support your child throughout the year. Year 2 is an important stage in children's learning as they continue to develop their knowledge, skills and independence whilst preparing for Key Stage 2.

Our Year 2 Team

Year 2 is made up of two classes:

2A

  • Teacher: Mrs Adams

2SW

  • Teachers: Mrs Walkingshaw (Monday and Tuesday)
  • Mrs Stevenson: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

Children are also taught by Mrs Watson and Mrs Taylor throughout the week.

Learning in Year 2

In Year 2, learning is underpinned by our school values of Belonging, Ambition, Kindness and Joy. We aim to develop confident, independent and resilient learners who are ready to challenge themselves, work collaboratively and take pride in their achievements.

Children continue to learn through a range of engaging and practical experiences across the curriculum. Throughout the year, pupils will study exciting topics including:

  • Exploring Drawing in Art
  • Making a Moving Monster in Design Technology
  • How Did We Learn to Fly? in History
  • What Is It Like to Live by the Coast? in Geography
  • Hot and Cold Places
  • What Was School Like in the Past?
  • Materials in Science

To enhance learning, children will also have opportunities to take part in educational visits, including trips to Carlisle Airport, Allonby/ Silloth Beach and Carlisle Castle.

Reading, Phonics and Spelling

Reading remains a key focus throughout Year 2. Across the school, we follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme. Once children have completed the phonics programme, they will move on to a structured spelling scheme.

Reading books and a sharing book are sent home and returned each week on a Friday. Reading records should be brought into school each day as they are used during planned reading sessions.

We strongly encourage regular reading at home, as confident readers are better equipped to access the wider curriculum and develop as successful writers.

Mathematics

At Stanwix School, we follow the White Rose Maths approach, helping children develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills through carefully sequenced learning. Throughout the year, children build upon their understanding of number, calculation and mathematical concepts in a variety of practical and meaningful contexts.

Physical Education

Children take part in PE twice each week and follow the Rising Stars Champions Sport, Health and Fitness scheme of work.

PE Days

  • Tuesday
  • Friday

PE Kit

Children should come to school wearing their PE kit on PE days.

The PE kit consists of:

  • Black shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms
  • Plain yellow T-shirt or Stanwix School yellow T-shirt
  • Black hoodie, tracksuit top or jumper
  • Trainers

Please ensure children do not wear earrings on PE days.

Homework

Homework will be set when appropriate to consolidate and extend learning completed in school. This may include reading, spelling, mathematics activities or online learning. Further information will be shared throughout the year as additional homework routines are introduced.

Healthy Schools

Children should bring a clearly named water bottle to school each day containing water only. Fruit is provided as a snack, although children may also bring a piece of fruit from home if they wish.

As a nut and legume-free school, we ask that no nuts are included in packed lunches or snacks.

Communication

This page will be updated throughout the year with curriculum information, key dates and class updates. If you have any questions regarding your child's learning, wellbeing or school life, please speak to a member of the Year 2 team, who will be happy to help.

We look forward to working with you throughout the year and supporting your child as they continue their journey through Year 2.
