Walking Home Independently
For some pupils in Years 5 and 6, walking home independently can be an important step towards greater confidence and responsibility. At Stanwix School, we recognise that every child develops independence at their own pace, and parents/carers may request permission for their child to leave school independently when they feel the time is right.
Key Points
- Independent walking home is available for Year 5 and Year 6 pupils.
- A parent/carer authorisation form and a pupil "My Promise" form must be completed before permission can be considered.
- Permission must be approved by the Headteacher before a child can leave school unaccompanied.
- Parents should carefully consider their child's maturity, road safety awareness, route home and arrangements for arriving safely.
- Permission applies only at the end of the normal school day and does not automatically extend to Wraparound Care, educational visits or other after-school activities.
- Parents/carers remain responsible for their child once they have left the school site.
- The school may review or withdraw permission if safeguarding or behavioural concerns arise.
Working Together to Keep Children Safe
Before requesting permission, we encourage parents and carers to discuss expectations with their child, agree clear arrangements for the journey home, and ensure they know what to do if plans change or they need help. Regularly reviewing these arrangements can help ensure they remain safe and appropriate throughout the year.
