Welcome to 6F

The children of Year 6 are grouped across the whole year for Numeracy, Literacy and Science. This ensures they are taught in ways which best suit their needs at all levels.

The main topics that we cover are autobiographies, biographies, narrative, information leaflets, diary writing, descriptive writing, debate and poetry. These genre will be linked with our Topic this term, ‘ Journeys’. Neat presentation with  legible joined up handwriting is expected at all times. A whole school focus this year is spelling, words should be practised daily for a weekly test on Friday.

Times tables to 12 must be learnt for instant recall. Number bonds to 20, adding and taking away, are also crucial to all work this term and should be memorised.

Our topic this term is journeys. We will be studying: the Monarchs, Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Charles I, Queen Victoria and Elizabeth II and their  impact on society today; and other journeys to Brazil and the Amazon.

In PE we will cover Tudor dance and the invasion games Rugby and Hockey. In RE we will be learning about the reformation and the creation of the Church of England.  In Art we will be looking at the artist Hans Holbein and the purpose of Royal portraits.

Outdoor PE is on a Monday afternoon and indoor PE is on a Friday afternoon. Please note that for both of these sessions the children are not allowed to wear jewellery. PE kit consists of a yellow shirt, black shorts and plimsolls in a small drawstring bag to hang on their coat peg. Outdoor kit is the yellow shirt, plain jogging bottoms and a sweat shirt with trainers, which is taken home after the lesson.

Weekly homework will include Literacy, Numeracy and Topic/Science. Short daily tasks may be set for Numeracy and Literacy on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights to be used in lessons the next day. The homework due dates may vary over the term and will be noted down by the children in their homework books or on given sheets.

The children will bring a reading book home with them each night. Please make sure they are reading this regularly, ideally every night. Reading records will be collected in for checking weekly. We have asked the children to collect 5 signatures from you during the week.

Music and Computing:

The children will have Music with Mrs Stewart and Computing with Mrs Thompson. This term in Music the topics are Music theory and ‘Don’t stop believing’. In Computing they are ’Internet safety and cyber bullying’ and ‘APP planners’.

Many thanks Miss Fitzsimons, Mrs Wilson 6W and Mrs Taylor
